P79 is currently an independently initiated and operated artist residency program. At this stage, the program does not receive long-term public or institutional funding sufficient to cover its full operating costs. We therefore ask participating artists to contribute toward the actual cost of the residency so that the accommodation, working facilities, and program activities can be delivered reliably and in full.
A “free residency” does not mean that the program itself has no costs. Rather, those costs are covered by governments, foundations, universities, museums, companies, or other funding partners. P79 is actively developing external partnerships, with the aim of offering more fully funded places, partial funding, and artist production grants in the future.
High-Quality, Certified Accommodation
P79 residents are accommodated at Poshangcun 79 Guesthouse The guesthouse has been recognized as a “Wanmei Gold-Rated Guesthouse” by Anhui Province and accredited as a National Class C Tourist Guesthouse. It is located approximately 900 metres from the Fushan Scenic Area.
This is a professionally operated and officially certified rural guesthouse. Every resident is provided with a private bedroom. Some rooms include a private bathroom, while others share one bathroom between two private bedrooms. The different fee categories reflect bathroom arrangements only; they do not affect access to studios, field trips, guest programs, public activities, or any other part of the residency.
The residency also provides shared social spaces, a kitchen, laundry facilities, and other everyday amenities, allowing artists to live and work in a stable and comfortable environment throughout the three-week program.
What Does the Residency Fee Support?
The residency lasts for 21 days. The fee is not simply an accommodation charge; it contributes to the overall delivery and operation of the program, including:
A private bedroom and essential living facilities
Shared professional workspaces and coordinated access to individual working areas
Outdoor spaces for artistic production and project development
Basic hand tools and power tools
A shared kitchen, laundry facilities, and communal amenities
Pick-up and drop-off at nearby railway stations or airports at the beginning and end of the residency
Local transportation for field trips and organized group activities
Program development, residency management, and local coordination
Visiting guests, studio visits, artist talks, and group discussions
Artist interviews, project documentation, and promotion through P79’s platforms
An Open Studio, public sharing, and presentation of work at the end of the residency
P79 is also in discussion with public cultural spaces in Tongling regarding opportunities for public presentations. We will continue to explore possibilities for subsequent exhibitions. The specific venue, format, and scope of any presentation will depend on the participating artists’ projects, the development and completion of their work, and final confirmation from partner venues.
The fee does not include long-distance travel to and from Anhui, visas, personal insurance, meals and personal living expenses, or specialized materials required for individual projects.
Payment Does Not Guarantee Admission
P79 is not a pay-to-participate program.
There is no application fee. Every application is reviewed by the P79 team and invited reviewers and assessed according to the following criteria:
The continuity and clarity of the applicant’s artistic practice
The quality of the portfolio and application materials
The thoughtfulness and feasibility of the proposed residency plan
The relationship between the applicant’s practice and the context of this residency
The applicant’s ability to participate for the full three weeks
The applicant’s willingness to engage in a shared environment of living, exchange, and public presentation
The residency fee is charged only after an applicant has formally been offered a place. It does not influence the review process and does not provide preferential admission, additional exposure, or special access to professional opportunities.
P79 offers a genuine residency experience, appropriate living and working conditions, a professional environment for exchange, and opportunities for public presentation. We do not present the residency as a professional outcome that can be purchased.
Partial Funding
One partial-funding award of RMB 2,000 is available for this residency session. Applicants may explain their circumstances, why they are requesting support, and how this funding would enable them to participate in the program.
Funding requests will be considered on the basis of both the artistic review and the applicant’s demonstrated financial need.
What Kind of Residency Are We Building?
Operating independently allows P79 to maintain a high degree of autonomy in artist selection, research direction, and program structure.
We do not require every artist to work under a single prescribed theme, nor do we expect participants to complete a predetermined work within three weeks. Instead, we encourage artists to engage with Poshangcun and its surrounding environment, allowing their practices to develop through daily life, observation, research, making, and exchange.
At this stage, P79’s most important responsibility is to deliver the accommodation, working facilities, professional exchange, field research, and public presentation opportunities promised to participating artists. From this foundation, we aim to build an independent artist residency program that can operate sustainably over the long term while gradually securing broader external support.
